In describing her drawings, Joan explains, “My subjects include the banality of mass produced domestic artifacts; the politics of war; sexual identity and power; and the beauty disclosed in the close scrutiny of natural and man made structures. This diversity of subject matter is a critical element in my attempt to express the complexity and variety of contemporary life.” Joan is known for making drawings packed with thousands, even hundreds of thousands of tiny, energized marks. Her large-scale images of quotidian subjects find inspiration from my immediate surroundings. One project, Operation Sunshine, explores the toxic chemical and radioactive waste sites of the Buffalo -Niagara region. Her artwork has been exhibited in over 25 solo exhibitions including the Albright Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, She has been awarded residency fellowships at Yaddo, MacDowell Colony, Villa Montalvo, Smack Mellon Studios, Lower East Side Printshop, and a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant.
