Burgin's more recent works often elaborate upon associations made following chance encounters. In this case he came upon a photograph on the Internet of the “Brightside" district of Sheffield, in the industrial north of England, where he spent his childhood. Unaccountably, he found himself led to thoughts of Solaris, the 1962, science-fiction novel by Stanislaw Lem, and its 1972 film adaptation by Andrei Tarkovsky – and to the word “adaptation" in its various senses.
