Cristin Tierney Gallery is pleased to be presenting at The Armory Show 2019. Visit us in booth #827 to see an installation of single-channel videos by peter campus. The works, spanning 2011 to 2014, are abstract, brilliantly hued interpretations of eastern US coastlines and seascapes. Breaking down the observed environment into subtle shifts of light and color, they overtly reference the history of painting, particularly that of modern masters such as Cézanne, Monet, and Corot. In line with the artist's decades-long interest in the landscape, this group of videos is a loving testament to the beauty of the natural world. For campus it is here the most essential truths of self-actualization and harmonious coexistence lie.
On Sunday, March 10th, at 3:00 pm, campus will have a discussion about his career and the evolution of time-based media with Dr. Tina Rivers Ryan, Assistant Curator at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. Their conversation will be presented at The Armory Show as part of the fair's Armory Live program.
Cristin Tierney's presentation of peter campus at The Armory Show is concurrent with several other exhibitions of the artist's work in New York City. On March 6th, the traveling survey exhibition video ergo sum, which explores the artist's video work from the '70s to the present, opens at The Bronx Museum of the Arts. video ergo sum is curated by Anne-Marie Duguet, and organized by the Jeu de Paume, Paris. It is the first US survey of the artist's work. A public reception with the artist will be held at the museum on Thursday, March 7th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
On Friday, March 8th, Cristin Tierney Gallery has its grand re-opening at its new location, 219 Bowery, Floor 2 in New York. The first exhibition will feature two video works by peter campus, called shinnecock bay and installed on large-scale screens. A brunch reception is planned for March 8th from 10:00 am to noon. The artist will be present.
From March 1st through the 31st, campus' 1976-77 video Head of a Sad Young Woman will be screened nightly from 11:57pm until midnight in Times Square as part of Times Square Arts' Midnight Moment program. Midnight Moment is the world's largest, longest-running digital art exhibition, synchronized nightly on electronic billboards throughout Times Square. In March, these screens will be taken over by campus' tightly cropped video of a woman who is nearly motionless as she stares into the camera for three minutes. The scale and her sober demeanor suggest a quiet power and emotional intensity as she towers over the landmark intersection.
